SMART goals are a great way to produce real direction for you

I assume it is well known that SMART goals are a great way to produce real direction for you. I used and taught the S.M.A.R.T. Goal acronym for years. This certainly did bring success, and yet, I sensed something was missing. When I began looking at this in earnest, especially as a network marketer, I found what it was.

Let’s break this down to a scenario that is easy to relate to.

Think of writing an article. We use article marketing quite a bit to get messages out, increase our site’s traffic, and more. And there are some great resources on this site speaking to article marketing strategies.

When writing an article we need to be clear on our goals. Using the old acronym S.M.A.R.T., we know that our goals must be measurable, specific, attainable, realistic, and timely. As this acronym has been passed around for years, I assume most of us are familiar with how to orient our goals to be in line with being S.M.A.R.T.

However, this misses two key ingredients.

To make our S.M.A.R.T. goals S.M.A.R.T.e.R. we have to add enjoyment and make them “Relational.”

In reality, life is not about the goal. The goal offers us direction and it can inspire us to push further and harder than we otherwise would have. The goal also focuses us along a journey. The journey is the ride and what truly needs to be enjoyed.

When we enjoy the journey as we head towards our goals, we open ourselves up to gratitude. Gratitude then opens our hearts and inspires us to serve more.
