While most of us will never need an emotional evaluation because we’ve committed a violent crime, the techniques required in forensic psychology can prove helpful in personal development. Objective introspection, although brutally honest and painful, can be liberating. Likewise, knowing when and how to set aside our emotional reflexes enable us to feel in control rather than being controlled by the challenges we face.

 

There are many avenues through which one can seek self-improvement, but none will offer the concentrated truth an examination through forensic psychology can bring.

 

1) During a trial, the defense and prosecution present witnesses who offer testimony to support their client’s position. Yet forensic psychologists must remain unbiased and present only facts, allowing the proverbial chips to fall where they may regardless of how they reflect on the client. Through this practice we can find clarity on whether we are saying what we mean or what someone wants to hear.

 

2) One technique in forensic psychology is the assessment of malingering or deception. While someone might be able to fake symptoms temporarily to avoid responsibility for their actions, long-term scrutiny reveals the truth. To examine ourselves from this perspective will eventually force us to conclude whether we are “being our self” or “faking” to acquire approval.
